With the words carmina Virgilii mitte minora, precor Walahfrid Strabo asked Prudentius of Troyes to send him poems from the ‹Appendix Vergiliana›. The first part of the paper investigates such efforts to collect Vergilian texts in the 9th century. The most important result of these efforts is a manuscript known only from a library catalogue in Murbach, that secured transmission of most of the poems and might go back to Walahfrid’s initiative. The second part argues for a horizontal reading of the two columns with ‹Vergiliana› in the Murbach catalogue. By doing so, the order of the poems in the extant manuscripts can be explained and the Murbacens is definitively established as the archetype. In the third part, the medieval testimonia that help in revealing transmission processes are discussed. The Echtheitskritik of Vincent of Beauvais is particularly interesting. Other witnesses prove that some lines of the ‹Appendix Vergiliana› were in circulation apart from the manuscripts. Some of these were no longer recognizable as quotations from Vergilian poems, while others stressed his authority.
